Model Making

A model answers questions a drawing cannot.

Model making turns sketches into physical, scaled objects. This course covers cardboard, foam, clay, wood and 3D-printed models, and how to choose the right fidelity for the question being tested.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. 01 Choose model type and scale for a clear purpose
  2. 02 Build accurate card and foam models
  3. 03 Use clay and sculpting for organic forms
  4. 04 Finish models for presentation
  5. 05 Gather feedback from handling a model
01

Why Make Models

Physical models reveal proportion, ergonomics and presentation issues quickly. Many problems invisible on screen show up in the hand.

02

Cardboard and Foam Models

Cheap materials allow fast iteration and mistakes. Accurate cutting and joining still matter at low fidelity.
02 ▶ present
03

Clay and Organic Forms

Clay supports quick changes to curved shapes. Templates and sections keep symmetry and proportion under control.

04

Scale, Detail and Finishing

Scale determines how much detail is useful. Finishing level should match the audience and the stage of the project.

Testing with a Model

Handing a model to users gives direct feedback on size, weight and use. Record observations while people interact.
