Design Foundations

The irreducible core. Seeing, Thinking, Making, Knowing, every designer, regardless of discipline, needs these before anything else.

Four Silos · 28 Courses

Start Here

Not sure where to begin? These three courses are the most foundational.

Foundations are not prerequisites to skip, they are the discipline itself, compressed into first principles. A designer who has deeply studied Seeing, Thinking, Making, and Knowing will outperform one who has only learned tools, every time, in every context.

About the Foundation track

The Foundation track is the shared core of design education. It is organised into four silos, Seeing, Thinking, Making and Knowing, because every design discipline, from graphics to products to interfaces, depends on the same four capacities: perceiving carefully, reasoning clearly, making skilfully and understanding context.

Each silo contains short, structured courses with a real module list, learning outcomes and activities. The courses are written for design students at Indian design schools and for international learners who want a clear reference rather than a loose collection of tutorials. Foundation courses are tool-neutral, so what you learn stays useful as software changes.

What you will be able to do

  • See and describe visual structure with precise vocabulary
  • Frame problems and choose a thinking method on purpose
  • Make and test physical and digital models
  • Place your work in historical, cultural and theoretical context

How to study this

Begin with Elements and Principles of Design and Design Thinking, then alternate between a Seeing or Making course and a Thinking or Knowing course. Doing one practical and one conceptual course in parallel keeps skills and understanding moving together.

Who it is for

First-year design students, applicants preparing for design entrance examinations, working professionals who learned by doing and want the underlying principles, and teachers building a syllabus.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need drawing skills before starting?
No. The Seeing silo teaches observational drawing from the beginning. What matters is regular practice and honest attention, not prior talent.
Are the Foundation courses free to read?
Yes. Course outlines and published content on this site are free to read for personal learning. Some courses are still in development and are marked clearly.
How is this different from a video course?
These courses are structured reference material. Each module states a clear idea, gives activities and assignments, and can be revisited quickly, which is difficult with long videos.
