Photography for Designers

The camera is a design tool before it is an art tool.

This course covers camera fundamentals through the lens of visual communication. Designers learn exposure, focus, light and composition well enough to plan, brief and shoot the imagery their projects need.

In Development

This course's full module content is being written. The outline below is final, subscribe for updates when it publishes.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. 01 Control exposure using aperture, shutter speed and ISO
  2. 02 Choose lenses and focal lengths for a specific purpose
  3. 03 Shape and direct natural and artificial light
  4. 04 Compose frames that support a design brief
  5. 05 Edit and export images for print and screen
01

Exposure Fundamentals

Aperture, shutter speed and ISO trade off against each other. Knowing the triangle lets you choose depth, motion and noise deliberately instead of accepting automatic settings.

02

Lenses and Perspective

Focal length changes perspective, compression and field of view. Selecting a lens is a compositional decision, not only a technical one.

03

Light and Its Direction

Direction, quality and colour of light define mood and form. Moving the subject or the source often improves an image more than changing the camera.

04

Composition for Communication

Framing, cropping and negative space should serve the message. A photograph in a layout needs room for type and a clear focal point.

05

Planning a Shoot

A shot list, reference images and a simple lighting plan prevent wasted days. Briefing a photographer uses the same vocabulary you learn here.

06

Editing and Delivery

Consistent colour, cropping and file settings keep images coherent across media. Export formats should match the final print or screen use.
