Academic Writing for Research

Writing that survives scrutiny, not just reads well.

Academic writing communicates methodology, findings, and argument with a precision and traceability that general design writing does not require. This course covers structuring a research paper, citing sources correctly, and writing methodology sections precise enough for another researcher to evaluate or replicate.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. 01 Structure a research paper's standard sections appropriately
  2. 02 Write a methodology section precise enough for another researcher to evaluate
  3. 03 Apply citation standards correctly and consistently
  4. 04 Distinguish academic argumentative structure from general design writing
  5. 05 Present findings and limitations honestly within academic conventions
  6. 06 Revise academic writing for clarity without sacrificing necessary precision
01

Standard Research Paper Structure

The conventional research paper structure, introduction, literature review, methodology, findings, discussion, exists to let readers navigate and evaluate a study efficiently, not as arbitrary convention.

02

Writing a Precise Methodology Section

A methodology section should be precise enough that another researcher could evaluate, or in principle replicate, the study from the description alone.
02 ▶ present
03

Citation Standards & Academic Integrity

Consistent, correct citation traces every claim back to its source, both crediting prior work and letting readers verify the claim independently.
03 ▶ present
04

Academic Argument Structure

Academic argument builds a claim through evidence and reasoning made explicit at each step, a different discipline than persuasive design writing, which can rely more on visual and narrative technique.
04 ▶ present
05

Presenting Findings & Limitations Honestly

A credible findings section discloses limitations and alternative explanations alongside the primary result, rather than presenting only the interpretation that best supports the paper's thesis.

06

Revising for Clarity Without Losing Precision

Academic writing can and should be revised for clarity, but not at the cost of the precision that makes a claim evaluable, the two goals are compatible with careful editing.
